The DC Center for the LGBT Community is a group that sponsors events related to LGBT issues and culture and provides a litany of resources to the LGBT community. Resources include support groups, health and mental health services, and career training. Events include workshops that seek to better-educate the public about issues facing transgender individuals, literature and film festivals, and unity social gatherings for transgender individuals and allies.

GLAAD, formerly the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is a national organization that works to monitor coverage of LGBT individuals in the media and promote positive attitudes toward LGBT individuals by working with other national advocacy groups. GLAAD’s Transgender Media and Education program provides training to news outlets and individuals to ensure the fair and appropriate treatment of the trans community in the media.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is the “largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans,” and it exerts enormous influence in public debates over equal rights. The HRC helps to educate the public about transgender issues. It also provides transgender individuals and their families with support through counseling, ensuring fair treatment under the law, and finding adequate healthcare and health insurance, among other resources.

The National Center for Transgender Equality is a non-profit that collaborates with the country’s network of transgender advocacy groups and allies to provide information about treatment of transgender individuals, and education to support the ongoing progress toward equal civil rights. Its resources include extensive information about treatment of and legal rights afforded to transgender individuals in the States, and the Center works with congressional offices to disseminate this information and better states’ practices.

The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF) is committed to ending discrimination based upon gender identity and expression and to achieving equality for transgender people through public education, test-case litigation, direct legal services, and public policy efforts.
